As part of recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Commission on Sustainability, the MTA was tasked with reducing the impact of public transit on the environment. MTA’s New York City Transit has installed approximately 6,500 sustainable, recycled, composite ties in a major Staten Island Railway (SIR) track renewal project to repair significant damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.
