Video Cameras on Metro-North Pascack Valley and Port Jervis Line Train Cars To Improve Safety & Security for Customers & Employees
NJ TRANSIT has installed video cameras in customer areas of rail cars beginning with the Metro-North rail fleet operating on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley Lines.
That includes outward and inward facing cameras on Metro-North’s fleet of 15 Cab Cars and 15 locomotives.
The outward-facing cameras will be used to record track and wayside activities, and the inward-facing cameras will be used to record the engineer’s control area.
NJ TRANSIT has also begun installing passenger area cameras on Metro-North’s 65 Comet V coaches. The first coach has been completed and is ready to be placed back into service on the Port Jervis Line.
These passenger-area cameras will improve customer and crew safety by acting as a deterrent to crime. They will also aid investigations after accidents and other incidents, as well as help deter behaviors that could affect safe train operations.
There is no audio recording of the passenger areas and signage will be posted at both ends of the passenger compartment to inform customers that the car is equipped with video surveillance.
In February 2014, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended installing inward and outward-facing cameras in train cabs.
