Station Operations and Train Service Summary
The LIRR remains steadfastly focused on protecting employees and customers throughout the span of this pandemic and for the future as well. Below are some Rules & Reminders to help keep everyone safe and healthy.
- Thorough disinfecting and cleaning remains ongoing, with all LIRR train cars being sanitized at least once a day and stations at least twice daily. We’ve introduced a range of innovative cleaning techniques, from new anti-microbial disinfectants to handheld electronic foggers, which allow our employees to dispense a highly effective botanical disinfectant throughout an entire train car within minutes. The MTA has also begun piloting a new technology, which has has been certified by an EPA-approved facility to effectively kill 99.99998% of all airborne viruses, including COVID-19, to filter and purify the air inside railcars. This new system builds on, and can be integrated with, our current one, which continuously filters and circulates air, ensuring that every 5 minutes, or 12 times an hour, outside fresh air has fully replaced the air from within the car. You can help in this effort by refraining from eating/drinking on trains and at stations and taking all trash, especially gloves and masks, with you when you exit. Dispose of all garbage properly in a platform receptacle.
- Practice social distancing by standing at least six feet apart at stations and on platforms, whenever possible. Floor markers and signage have been placed throughout our system to encourage social distancing at Ticket Windows, Ticket Machines and other key locations. Entrances and exits have also been marked to direct the flow of traffic.
- On trains, spread out and stagger seating whenever possible. If feasible, consider adjusting your work schedule to avoid rush-hour periods. Use the LIRR’s revamped TrainTime app, which can help identify cars with greater potential for social distancing with its real-time car-capacity information, the first app of its kind in North America with this ability. The new app is loaded with features that increase convenience and keep you in the know regarding service.
- Customers must wear a mask on trains and at stations. Masks must completely protect your nose and mouth and must remain on for the duration of your travel, regardless of vaccination status, and regardless of social distancing. As of Monday, September 14, 2020, customers who refuse to wear a mask are subject to a $50 fine by police. Enforcement officers will issue a fine as a last resort: they’ll first offer the passenger a free mask, and if they refuse, police may issue them a summons with a $50 fine. Free masks are also available at staffed LIRR Ticket Offices. We've also installed PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Vending Machines at key LIRR stations (currently Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal, Hicksville and Ronkonkoma, with more to come) that sell masks, gloves, sanitizer and related items. We’ve also promoted and participated in the MTA’s Operation Respect campaign, which included the establishment of an “MTA Mask Force” that has been periodically visiting LIRR Stations to hand out free masks.
- Continue to practice good hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands frequently and thoroughly, avoiding high-touch surfaces, and staying home if you feel sick.
- Buy tickets in advance, including using MTA eTix for contactless purchase and display of tickets.
