Starting Monday, January 7: New Timetables Reflect Changes Due to Amtrak’s Penn Station Renewal & East Side Access Work

Morning & Evening Rush Hour Trains Affected; To Offset the Changes, Five Trains Being Added and Select Trains to be Lengthened; Rush Hour Seating Capacity Reduction Limited to 1%

MTA Long Island Rail Road service will be modified starting Monday, January 7, as Amtrak, which owns and operates Penn Station, will be taking tracks out of service to perform the next phase of their critical track repairs.  Work will initially focus on Track 18, which will be out of service for several weeks, before work shifts to Track 17, and then to Track 16 around the end of March.  The resulting reduction in Penn Station capacity will impact trains starting Monday, January 7.  Five morning rush-hour trains to Penn Station and three evening rush-hour trains from Penn Station will be diverted. In addition, two evening rush-hour trains will be combined with subsequent trains scheduled to depart within six to 11 minutes of the canceled train; the combined train will make stops at all affected stations. To reduce the impact of these changes, the LIRR is adding two extra morning trains and three afternoon/evening trains, and is adding cars to select trains to increase seating capacity.  In addition, MTA’s East Side Access (ESA) work in Harold Interlocking will require further service reductions (some trains will be departing earlier or will have altered stopping patterns), but those changes will remain in effect only from January 7 through February 1, 2019.
