FASTRACK on the Q Subway line in Brooklyn

FASTRACK — MTA New York City Transit's aggressive maintenance program — returned to theQ line icon in Brooklyn for the second of two consecutive weeks. Q line icon trains did not run between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Prospect Park from 10 PM to 5 AM each night.  Free shuttle buses provided alternate service, stopping at 7 Av.
NYC Transit workers took full advantage of seven hours of train-free access to perform a range of cleaning and maintenance tasks of station and tunnel infrastructure, signal equipment, and track and third rail components.  
Joseph Leader, Senior Vice President for the Department of Subways, said, "Our FASTRACK efforts have been highly successful in repairing and maintaining a subway system that operates around the clock, providing a better work environment for employees and improving train service reliability for our customers."


Highlights of last night’s accomplishments include:

Track – Scraped and cleaned 2,305 feet of track and removed 52,700 pounds of debris.  Installed 733 tie plates, one new rail, and 476 friction pads.

Third Rail Operations Cleaned 2,900 feet of track under and around the third rail and corrected 49 defects.

Infrastructure – Grouted 52 leaks. Performed maintenance of two pump plants. Repaired 20 feet of benchwall.  Replaced 17 light bulbs.  Cleaned 825 feet of drains.  Chipped five square feet and poured 22 square feet of concrete. 

Check mark Station Environment – Scraped and cleaned 1,400 square feet of station surface area.  Primed 6,325 square feet of surface and painted 16,220 square feet, including 148 columns.  Repaired 100 square feet of the platform edge.  Chopped eight square feet of concrete.  Installed 20 feet of drain line.  Cleaned three vent drains and installed two drip pans.

Signals – Tested and serviced 18 signals and two switches, as well as other signal and switch equipment.  Performed maintenance at two switch locations.

Electronic Maintenance – Serviced 12 CCTV cameras and eight monitors. 


About FASTRACK

The FASTRACK program, which began in 2012, shuts down segments of a subway line for several hours over consecutive nights, allowing employees to perform a number of critical repair, cleaning, and maintenance jobs. This approach has proven successful in that, under normal conditions in our 24/7 system, the scope and amount of important work completed would be impossible to accomplish with customers and trains moving through work areas. Tasks completed during FASTRACK have had a positive impact on train service with a reduction in train delays and a decrease in the number of track fires, while realizing cost efficiencies and a lower accident rate for employees.
