Final Scoping Document for the Proposed Reconstruction and Expansion of Jamaica Bus Depot Environmental Impact Statement
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, MTA Bus intends to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) pursuant to the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), Article 8 of the New York State Environmental Conservation Law for the reconstruction and expansion of the existing Jamaica Bus Depot (JBD), located at 165-18 Tuskegee Airmen Way in Jamaica, Queens, NY (Proposed Action).
The purpose of the Proposed Action is to reconstruct the existing JBD to improve the operation, maintenance and on-site storage of up to 300 Standard Bus Equivalents (SBEs). The Proposed Action will: allow projected future bus assignments at this depot; provide additional capacity due to the density of bus service in this section of the city and the long-range outlook for new service demands; and, accommodate potential route/ depot assignment reconfigurations. The need for the Proposed Project results from the antiquated operations and maintenance technology and limited storage space at the existing JBD. The Proposed Action would include the reconstruction of the JBD facility to include one to two new structures, each up to approximately 45 feet tall and include a total building area of up to approximately 460,000 square feet. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2021 and be completed in 2025.
A Draft Scoping Document (DSD) outlining the content of the DEIS was published and released to the public on May 18, 2016; a Public Scoping Meeting was held on June 15th, 2016, oral and written comments were accepted by the MTA NYCT until the close of the Public Comment period (July 8, 2016); and, a Final Scoping Document has been prepared with responses to the comments.
