Emilio Perez

Fluxus / Rythmus, 2019

Glass mosaic

For the 18 Av station on the Sea Beach Line in Brooklyn, artist Emilio Perez created Fluxus / Rythmus. The colorful and energetic artwork is composed of abstracted and stylized forms that are inspired by movement, spontaneity, and the expressiveness of painting. Perez creates his paintings by carving away paint from the ground, building his swirling forms that dance in front of the viewer. Perez’s distinctive, stylistic imagery was translated into 22 glass mosaic panels fabricated by Mosaicos Venecianos de México, who captured the detail of the paintings.

Perez captures the energy of the station’s location and its people through the use of bright colors and the ever-flowing movement of painterly forms. The pieces reflect the flow of the transit system as a living organism, in which every part of the system is interconnected. The artist hopes to inspire travelers with the continual energy that drives this city.
