Rail Safety Week

What is Rail Safety Week?

Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI), the national rail safety education nonprofit, works in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation and other organizations, like Metro-North Railroad (MNR), to observe Rail Safety Week each year. The goal of RSW is to raise awareness of the need for rail safety education and empower the general public to keep themselves safe near railroad grade crossings and railroad rights-of-way and tracks.

The first U.S. RSW was held in September 2017. This year marks the fourth annual observance of Rail Safety Week, and will be observed Monday, September 21st through Sunday, September 27th, 2020, in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Each year for RSW, Metro-North employees participate in week long outreach events, activities and presentations throughout the MNR territory.

*This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, all 2020 Rail Safety Week activities will have an emphasis on social media and virtual safety messaging.

Operation Clear Track

Operation Clear Track

Operation Clear Track is a national law enforcement RSW initiative that was started to help reduce grade crossing and trespassing incidents along railroad tracks throughout the U.S. In previous years during Operation Clear Track, more than 500 local, state, federal and railroad police organizations are stationed at grade crossings across the country to distribute safety materials to motorists and pedestrians and reinforce the importance of crossing and trespass laws.

Each year, Metro-North partners with the MTA Police Department, OLI, Amtrak and other local law enforcement agencies to participate in Operation Clear Track.

This year, Operation Clear Track will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event will be going virtual as opposed to in-person events. Be on the lookout for Operation Clear Track social media posts and safety messages.
