An Important Message to Our Customers
The tragic derailment at Spuyten Duyvil has shaken Metro-North Railroad to its core. The loss of life and the injuries to our customers and fellow employees has deeply affected everyone who works at the railroad. Our sympathies go out to the families of the deceased and all those who were injured.
The MTA and Metro-North Railroad are committed to the safety of our customers and employees and will take all necessary actions to operate the railroad in the safest manner possible.
We have been engaged in a review of existing safety and operating practices since the New Haven Line derailment in May, and have aggressively addressed a number of areas.
Of particular note is the completion of the Bronx Right-of-Way Improvement Project between Woodlawn and Melrose. This intensive focus on track improvements is critical to the safe and reliable operation of the railroad. We thank you for your patience during the six months as we expedited this essential work and recognize the impact it has had on the railroad's ability to provide reliable, on-time service.
Subsequent to the derailment at Spuyten Duyvil, Metro-North has taken a number of additional actions. Please see the status of our most recent safety improvements.
We will also continue to work cooperatively with the Federal Railroad Administration to identify and implement any further improvements to the safety of our operation, while we cooperate fully with the National Transportation Safety Board on its investigation into the December 1 derailment as well.
Metro-North has had a long history of the highest commitment to safety, and, prior to these recent tragic events, our record has been a proud one. Every employee at Metro-North is committed to working diligently to operate the railroad in the safest manner possible, and to regain your trust. Your safety has always been, and always will be, our first priority.
