LIRR Rebuilds for Long Island's Future
LIRR Wantagh Station to Undergo Major Renovations
The MTA Long Island Rail Road will begin a two-year platform replacement project at the Wantagh Station in the spring of 2016. Funded by the MTA LIRR's Capital Improvement Program, the renovated station will feature new and updated amenities such as:
- Replacement of the 12-car elevated platform
- Addition of an elevator
- Replacement of existing escalator
- New heated platform waiting room
- New center staircase
- Refurbishment of four staircases
- New segmented platform canopy
- Energy-efficient platform lighting
- New signage & public address system
How will this impact your commute?
The construction schedule is divided into two phases to allow for demolition and reconstruction work to take place while maintaining regularly scheduled service, although some schedule changes may be necessary at times.
Platform construction will affect how you board or exit the train, as follows:
Phase 1: Westbound customers will board or exit the train in the first six cars only (the remaining cars will not be accessible to/from the platform); eastbound customers will board or exit the train in the last six cars only (the remaining cars will not be accessible to/from the platform). Phase 2: Westbound customers will board or exit the train in the last six cars only (the remaining cars will not be accessible to/from the platform); eastbound customers will board or exit the train in the first six cars only (the remaining cars will not be accessible to/from the platform).
During construction, there will be 18 fewer unrestricted parking spaces in order to accommodate the staging of construction equipment and materials. Additionally, six parking spaces for the mobility impaired (currently located under the viaduct on the south side) will be relocated to the north side.
Allow Extra Travel Time & Listen for Announcements
While the work is underway, Wantagh customers should allow extra time to find parking. Extra time will also be needed to access the active portion of the platform from available staircases in order to board trains. Customers exiting the train at Wantagh must board the appropriate cars at the time of the train's departure, since not all cars will open. Announcements will be made directing customers to the proper cars for boarding and exiting at Wantagh Station during each phase of this project.
