Parents: Talk to Your Kids About LIRR Safety
We ask parents to please take a momentand speak with your children, especially teenagers, about the dangers of being on or near LIRR tracks. A few moments of advice can go a long way…and even save a life. Many children are unaware that LIRR trains are deceptively quick and surprisingly quiet and can appear suddenly, without much warning. Our trains also may be traveling at high speeds. Young people need to be reminded that in areas where trains depend on third rail electric power, the third rail is always live, carrying 750 volts of electricity. Please make certain your child knows that the LIRR Right of Way is no place to just ‘hang out.’ It can be a deadly mistake.
At the LIRR, employees have an expression when working on or near the tracks: "Any time is train time." Simply stated, it means that if, as an employee, you’re authorized to be on or around the tracks, be alert and aware that at any time a train can be where you are with little advance notice. Scheduled and unscheduled LIRR trains operate around the clock, every day, on all branches. Our point here is that unauthorized people should not be on or around LIRR tracks anytime, anywhere, for any reason. It is illegal and also foolhardy. So please find a minute or two to speak with the young people you know about this important safety issue…the life you save could be that of someone dear to you.
Good Friday and Passover Extra Service
The LIRR will provide nine additional eastbound trains from Penn Station on Friday, April 6 between 2 PM and 4 PM for customers leaving early to observe

Peak and off-peak customers going to/from stations east of Speonk will be provided with substitute bus service in order to complete their trips. Special timetables will be available in early April at stations or online.

This time we’ll focus on the Port Washington Branch, along with Woodside, Forest Hills and Kew Gardens stations. Concerns? Questions? LIRR managers will be on hand to hear from you directly.
Before long the “Boys of Summer” will be back in action at Citi Field and the LIRR is your best way to see the Mets this season. Trains will begin making stops at the Mets-Willets Point Station on opening day, Thursday, April 5 as the Amazins’ take the field against the Braves. Game time is 1:10 PM. Remember, direct train service to the ballpark is available from Penn Station, Woodside, and all stations on the Port Washington Branch. The ride from Penn Station is just 19 minutes. For fans traveling from Long Island on other branches, fans can reach Citi Field by changing trains at Woodside. Check out our website for details.
February was another very good month for the LIRR’s on-time performance (OTP). An overall 96.38% on time figure for last month is the best-ever for the month of February since 1979, when the current on-time performance system was introduced. The previous February OTP record was 95.7%, set in 2002.
